Quote
"the movie instead presented him as an egotistical, rude, smug, reckless, uncaring, self-centred, smart-alecky, smarmy, snotty, know-all, pain-in-the-neck who would have been much improved had he been soundly spanked on a regular basis, who should be allowed nowhere near civilized people, and who would surely have been THE LAST to be handed control of a big expensive space ship."

Umm, add womaniser, (which this one was also) and isn't that pretty close to the Kirk from the original series?

You could add "womaniser", but you'd have to remove some of the other descriptors.  The original Kirk was magnetic, easy to like, and had a ready empathy with others (indeed this what made him the character and captain he was); this current Kirk - at least as a boy and young man - needs a swift kick up the backside!  He had a reckless unconcern for anyone else, and no sane person would want to offer him house room.  In short, the movie's efforts to portray him as unconventional only made him into a complete ass, and this was a writing and directing error, without question.  Huh?

BTW, Mr. J, I love your avatar.  How'd you get the wee lion cub to do this?  Presumably you got help from MGM?   Wink

I know this probably does not count but I watched Watchmen on the plane on the way home from me hols, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the almost anti-heroesque characters that seemed flawed as well. I knew very little about the film and had not read the comics/books. 8/10  Big Grin

This is my thread, all of you get out!

I ended oop going to the cinema on saturday, with some friends I met in the pub on friday. We ended up going to see Terminator Salvation...

And ya know, it was half bad in my opinion. I actually tried to dislike the thing but overall it won me over I was glad I went to see it in spectacular fashion.  Whistle

... and my son and I just got back from seeing "Drag me to Hell".  Surprisingly good, and with no real slow parts... Big Grin

Went to see Sherlock Holmes tonight. It's had very mixed reviews but we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Robert Downey Jr was great as Holmes and the relationship between him and Jude Law as Watson seemed to work very well. If your intention is to be entertained rather than intellectually stimulated I highly recommend it.
Good Xmas Film!

Not at the cinema (Shhh  Roll Eyes ) but I watched Avatar a couple of days ago, and wow!  What an excellent film if you are into the sci fi genre.  Both an excellent story and mind blowing special effects.

This one I could watch more than once, no problem.   I should imagine it would be even more spectacular at a big cinema screen, or even in 3D, which I believe is available at some locations too.

I think I will put this almost on an even par with Blade Runner, which is my favourite film of all time.

I also have a copy of Avatar Mick but havent got round to watching it yet, as for the 3d version a friend of mine went to see it at the imax in waterloo and it blew him away, the 3d glasses are clear and not like the red/blue ones you used to get, he cant praise the film enough, he told me people were ducking and putting there arms up as the effects were so good but on the downside he felt a little sea sick when he left the cinema  Smiley as for other films i recently saw Law Abiding Citizen which i found excellent, thought it would be a predictable hollywood run of the mill type of film but i was wrong  Smiley if you get films from the darker side of the net then get this region 5 copy its excellent  Wink Law.Abiding.Citizen.LiNE.R5.XviD-DEViSE but we don't condone this type of activity here at the Sanctuary  Shocked

Was at the cinema yesterday to watch 'Avatar 3D IMAX' but all tickets sold out except for the front row, which I don't wanna be on in front of an IMAX screen  Shock

WOW!!  Shocked up there with Bladerunner?! I must get to see this soon BR is in my all time top 3 films.

I watched Pandorum recently which I enjoyed, a bit flawed in placed but a good premise and a nice twist at the end, kepy me entertained for a couple of hours.

Been catching up on this thread and some movie-films! I'm exempting myself from actual cinema viewings because well I haven't been to the flicks in years.

Star Trek

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Felt a lot closer to the badass hellraiser Kirk really should have been in the TV series.

I also liked the way they determined early on that this is happening in an alternate timeline - this has been done to death in scifi already but felt like a natural way to "reboot" everything in this case.

Watchmen

I have read and loved the comics and probably because of this felt the film was sadly lacking the more sinister undertone of the graphic novels. Quite an enjoyable watch if you take it as a standalone effort.

District 9

Interesting take on some of the fundamental flaws of human nature mixed with a slickly done alien romp. Probably not supposed to be funny but I laughed long and hard at some parts. Would watch again.

Oops forgot some: Quantum of Solace

No. Just no.

fast car chases in expensive vehicles check
gorgeous women check
glamorous locations check
super hi tech spy gadget stuff check
subtle humor ah, er?
a bond that left me feeling like a 20ft tall mountain of testosterone after the film nope

Just didn't feel like a bond film to me, more like somebody had given them a "Bond for Dummies" and something was missing.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

This one got slated left right and center but I really liked it. Nothing too complicated just a full on action flick with a bit of cheesy story thrown in and some great effects work. Sometimes that's all you need.

Children of Men

Woo this is some powerful work. Very bleak but I couldn't tear myself away from it until the very end. Superb camera work really letyou feel you were in the thick of the action along with the actors and some very disturbing visuals that were happily not gratuitous in any way.

All my friends are polarised on this one, they love it or hate it. Best film I've seen in ages imo.

Moar films pleeeese!
