Grrrrrrrrrrrr! I hate it when that happens, have you checked your firewall, sometimes mine blocks steam especially after an update!

I'm with Virgin media, and  sometimes I can only see 70 -100 servers in the list.
Other times I can see 700 or so, very odd.
And on a few occasions I have been unable to see The Sanctuary servers, even though
I'm talking to someone on TS who is already playing in them.

The reason the STEAM servers are so slow or difficult to connect to, is that Valve have just released the new CS:Source from beta to online and every boring script kiddy and their peodo friends (code for CS Players) are downloading the crap.

So they have
http://store.steampowered.com/news/3976/

I switched my download server to POLAND and the games updated alot faster.

Valve has removed -tickrate from the command line so all servers on the new engine (CS:S) are 66 tick so IF HL2DM gets updated to the same engine 66 tick will be the only tickrate anyone can use which hopefully will put an end to hose crummy 100 tick dodgy physics servers where doors don't open/close at the correct speed.
Quote
Removed -tickrate command line option and defaulted tick rate to 66 rather than 33. This addressed a number of issues, including:

    * Tick rate affecting how fast doors open / close
    * Tick rate causing players hitting the ground to stutter
    * Tick rate affecting the firing mechanisms of certain guns
